Founder Joe Marcellino grew up watching his grandmother fry chicken on Sunday mornings — a ritual of crispy skin, bold spices, and love poured into every piece. After years in professional kitchens across the country, Joe returned to the Philadelphia area with one mission: bring that same soul-driven cooking to a community that craved real, uncompromising flavor.

Hangry Joe's opened its doors in 2018 at 175 City Ave, Bala Cynwyd, PA. What started as a small window-service spot quickly became a local institution. The secret? Never cutting corners. Joe Marcellino opens Hangry Joe's at 175 City Ave, Bala Cynwyd, PA. A humble window-service setup with a limited menu of three sandwiches — but lines form within the first week. Word spreads fast: this chicken is different.

2019

Menu Expansion

Customer demand drives our first major menu expansion. We introduce our iconic Nashville-style Hot Chicken Tenders, Loaded Fry Baskets, and our first rotating seasonal special. Over 10,000 orders served by year-end.

2020

Adapting & Thriving

Facing industry-wide challenges, Hangry Joe's pivots to a robust online ordering system and community delivery program. We introduce Family Meal Packs and become a neighborhood lifeline — feeding families when it mattered most.

2021

Recognition & Awards

Philadelphia Magazine names Hangry Joe's one of the region's Top 10 Casual Dining Spots. Our Spicy Honey Butter Sandwich wins "Best Sandwich" at the PA Food & Flavor Awards. The team grows to 15 passionate team members.

2022

Dine-In Experience Launch

After four years of takeaway-only service, Hangry Joe's opens a full dine-in area. Seats 40 guests in a warm, industrial-chic space. Catering services officially launch, bringing hangry joe's hot chicken to events, weddings, and corporate gatherings across the region.

2024

50,000 Orders Milestone

Hangry Joe's celebrates serving its 50,000th order — a landmark moment for a family-run restaurant. We launch our Loyalty Program and expanded dessert menu, and begin planning for future growth while staying true to our Bala Cynwyd roots.

The original hangry joe himself. Fifteen years of professional cooking, a grandmother's recipe book, and one unstoppable craving led Joe to open Hangry Joe's. He still hand-blends every spice mix in the kitchen.

Operations Manager

Maria keeps the kitchen running like clockwork. With a background in restaurant operations spanning two major Philadelphia chains, she joined Hangry Joe's in 2019 and has been the engine of our growth ever since.
